International Day of the Midwife – Event at Lady Dufferin Hospital

On May 6, 2025, the Cowasjee School of Midwifery at Lady Dufferin Hospital, Karachi, celebrated the International Day of the Midwife (IDM) with a series of events honoring the vital role of midwives in healthcare.
The celebration commenced with a walk around the school and hospital premises, symbolizing the commitment and unity of midwives. Following the walk, Principal Mrs. Mehmooda Khowaja delivered a welcome address, extending congratulations to midwives in Pakistan and worldwide on this significant day.
Distinguished guests attended the event, including Dr. Rafat Jan, President of the Midwifery Association of Pakistan (MAP); Mrs. Fakhrunnisa, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Nursing Sindh; Ms. Khairunnisa, Principal of the College of Nursing at Civil Hospital Karachi; Ms. Agnos Sohail, Principal of the School of Midwifery at Bilquees Edhi; and Ms. Neha Mankani, the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) representative. Ms. Mankani shared insights into her efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality and to strengthen midwifery services in Pakistan.
The speakers emphasized the importance of celebrating IDM and highlighted the critical role of midwives in crisis situations, including natural and man-made disasters. They acknowledged midwives as essential first responders who prepare mothers and families to face emergencies effectively.
The event proceeded with a lamp-lighting and oath-taking ceremony, symbolizing the dedication of midwives to their profession. Shields were distributed to the graduating classes of 2022 and 2024, recognizing their achievements and commitment to maternal and newborn health.
This year’s IDM theme, “Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis,” underscores the indispensable role of midwives in healthcare systems, especially during emergencies. Midwives are often on the front lines, providing essential care and support to women and newborns in challenging circumstances .
The celebration at Lady Dufferin Hospital reflects the global recognition of midwives’ contributions and the ongoing efforts to strengthen midwifery services in Pakistan and beyond.
